A good line makes aiming simple. Getting one on there is the chore.

When your line is straight, setup gets easy. Set the ball down, point the line where you want the ball to start, and step in. You can see exactly where you are aimed instead of guessing over the top of it. That is why so many players mark their ball in the first place — it takes one variable out of the shot.

The line is worth having. Putting it on there is the part that gets old.

Freehand works, but it takes a steady hand and usually a second try. A clip-on stencil gets you partway around, then you spin the ball and match up where you left off by eye. Balls that come pre-printed with a line are great right up until you want to play a different ball.

None of that means you are doing it wrong. It just means the tool is doing less than it should, and you are making up the difference.

That is the part the Halo takes over. It wraps your ball, gives the pen a groove to follow, and puts a straight line all the way around in one pass — on whatever ball is already in your bag. Ten seconds. Then you go back to your routine, with a better line in it.

Three moves. Ten seconds.

There is no technique to learn and no way to do it wrong.

Open it

The two halves pull apart. Set your ball in the bottom one.

Close it

The magnets grab and pull it shut on their own. The ball rolls to the middle by itself — you do not line anything up.

Trace it

Run the pen once around the groove and lift the top off. That is the whole thing.

Your pen has walls on both sides.

A pen only draws straight when something holds it straight. Most ball markers give the pen one edge to follow. One edge is not enough — the tip drifts off the open side, and you get a line that wanders.

The Halo wraps all the way around your ball and gives the pen a groove to sit down inside. There is a wall on the left and a wall on the right. The pen cannot wander, because there is nowhere for it to go.

And the groove is the same size every single time. The magnets inside touch each other before the plastic does, so the magnets decide how wide the groove is — not how hard you squeeze it. Slam it shut or close it gently and you get the exact same line. Your grip never enters into it.

The inside is shaped like a ball, so your ball settles into the middle on its own. You are not aiming it. You are just closing it.

Both halves are the same exact part, just flipped — one mold makes both, so they always match. That took about thirty prototypes to land on. This is not a first try.

Reasons it stays in your bag

One tool, one job, done properly.

A straight line, every time

Not most times. Every time. The tool does the work, not your hand.

Ten seconds a ball

Fast enough to mark a whole sleeve while you are waiting on the tee.

Works on the ball you already play

Any standard ball, any brand. Nothing new to buy.

You will stop losing your ball

A line around the whole ball is visible from any angle — in the rough, or in a group where three people are playing the same model.

A line you actually trust

A crooked line is worse than none, because you aim at it anyway. This one is straight, so you can believe it.

Nothing to break

No batteries. No hinge. No springs. Throw it in your bag and it will still work the same way next season.

The pen is included

A dual-tip marker comes with every one. Nothing else to order.

Mark as much or as little as you want

Full circle, half, or a short stripe. Your call.

It will not hurt your ball

Smooth plastic, and it only touches the ball for the ten seconds you are tracing.

Legal to use

Marking your ball is allowed — the rules actually recommend it. More on that below.

One for the bag. One for the house.

Most people mark a fresh ball at home and then wish they had it at the course. Every Halo ships with its own marker.

Is a line on your ball legal? Yes.

The rules do not limit what you draw on your own ball, as long as you can still read the brand and number. Pen markings are specifically allowed — and Rule 6.3a actually tells you to mark your ball so you can identify it.

Use a pen, not paint

Ink is fine. Coating a ball with something heavy enough to change how it flies is not. That is why a marker comes in the box.

Keep the brand and number readable

The one condition is that the ball's original markings can still be made out. A line around the middle is nowhere close to that limit.

Mark it, then put the tool away

The rules do not allow setting an object down to help you aim. That is about the tool, not the mark — mark your ball and pocket the Halo.

Questions

What pens work?

Regular or fine-point permanent markers. One comes with it.

Will it scratch my ball?

No. Smooth plastic, and about ten seconds of contact.

A round and then some. When it fades, re-trace it — ten seconds.

Do I have to mark the whole ball?

No. Trace the full circle or stop wherever you want.

Can I use it on a ball I have already marked?

Yes. Line your old mark up with the groove and trace over it.

Is it hard to use?

No. If you can close a container and draw a line, you can use it.
